The growing anticipation of German football fans will soon come to an end as the 2023/24 Bundesliga season is set to get underway this weekend. As always, here are the best weekly Bundesliga betting tips from the opening round of fixtures.
Looking back, the 2023/24 Bundesliga was undoubtedly the most exciting campaign in recent memory and it also provided one of the best endings to a season in the history of the competition. Record winners FC Bayern München were eventually crowned as the champions for its 11th straight title, but only after it scored a last-gasp winner on the final day to snatch the championship on goal-difference.
Borussia Dortmund came agonisingly close to ending its 10-year title-drought after heading into the final week on pole position of the league table. Dortmund even had one hand on the title after moving into a comfortable lead in its final game, but it all imploded during the latter period as it conceded a couple of goals which meant it could not secure the win that would have guaranteed the Bundesliga title.
RB Leipzig finished in 3rd spot of the Bundesliga for the 3rd time in its 5 campaigns at the top-flight, before successfully defending its DFB-Pokal title to cap off another successful season for the young club. Leipzig had to endure a rocky start to the season however, but it improved considerably in the latter half of the campaign by winning 10 of its last 14 league matches.
At the same time, Union Berlin added a new chapter to its remarkable tale of progress by taking 4th position in the Bundesliga and thereby earning qualification to the hallowed UEFA Champions League after just 4 seasons in the top-flight. Union was even heralded as an outside contender for the Bundesliga title after spending some weeks on pole position and it never dropped out from the top-5 for the entire season which is testament to its remarkable consistency.
SC Freiburg secured 5th position at the end of the 2022/23 Bundesliga campaign to equal its highest ever top-flight finish which came exactly a decade ago. Yet, there will be some disappointment after missing out on an elusive Champions League berth and crashing out in the semi-finals of the DFB-Pokal that may have handed the club its first major trophy.
Bayer Leverkusen took 6th position in the table, which is a superb achievement considering it was languishing in the relegation-zone during the first half of the season. A managerial change was the inspiration behind the upsurge in form, but failing to win any of its last 5 fixtures ended any slim chance of breaking into the top-4.
Meanwhile, Hertha Berlin and Schalke 04 were the 2 teams to get dropped out from the top division at the end of the season. Hertha Berlin finished on 18th spot largely due to its woeful form following the winter-break and it was relegated before the final weekend.
Schalke 04 returned to the top-flight after a 2-year absence but it has gone straight down after finishing the season in 17th position. Schalke completely overhauled its squad after earning promotion and in hindsight it was not a smart decision as the team barely found its balance before it was involved in a relegation scrap. Their berths will be taken over by FC Heidenheim and SV Darmstadt for the upcoming season.
